Cocaine & Love

In observation of the Valentine's Day...

From (CNN) -- Dr. Brown said scientists believe that when you fall in love, the ventral tegmental floods the caudate with dopamine. The caudate then sends signals for more dopamine.

"The more dopamine you get, the more of a high you feel," Dr. Brown says.

Or as her colleague, Dr. Helen Fisher put it: When you fall in love, "exactly the same system becomes active as when you take cocaine. You can feel intense elation when you're in love. You can feel intense elation when you're high on cocaine."

Male brain - female brain

In their work with the lovestruck, the scientists found brain differences between men and women.

"The men had quite a bit more activity in the brain region that integrates visual stimuli. This isn't surprising considering that men support the porn industry and women spend their lives trying to look good for men," says Dr. Fisher.

But she adds there's probably a more anthropological reason at work. Simply put: A man's evolutionary mission is to spread his seed. That won't work if he mates with an 80-year-old grandmother.

"Men have to be able to size up a woman visually to see if she can bear babies," says Dr. Fisher.

The women's brain activities were a bit more puzzling.

The scientists found that women in love had more activity than men in the areas of the brain that govern memories. Dr. Fisher theorizes that this is a "female mechanism for mate choice." There are no visual clues for whether a man is fertile, but if a woman really studies a man and remembers things about his behavior, she can try to determine whether he'd make a reliable mate and father.

Thus, if it sometimes seems like a woman remembers everything -- good and bad -- about a man, "it's not just her being picky. It's an old Darwinian evolutionary strategy."

Lets all get really HIGH today! Love you all!

Sushi - The Art of Shooting Raw

During my time at PM, one of my most memorable assignment was shooting sushi at Sushi Rock.

Imagine how cool it is to get to eat all those sushi (plus a martini!) ... while "working."

About the Shoot:
1. Nikon D70S with 50mm/1.8 lens
2. Natural light for most of the part, flash (SB-80) with reflects.

Blurb

Over the weekend, I came across a website called "Blurb." While searching for a "second job" on Craigslist, one of the company posting the ad was called Blurb. Wanting to know more about the company before I send in my resume, I went to the site to check it out. It turns out to be an interesting place. They are a start up company, providing service similar to what Apple is offering - creating books. If you are familiar with the Apple Photo book, then you can instantly understand the kind of products they are providing. However, Blurb offers a more extensive choices, in terms of publishing products.

Some of the products offered are cook book, portfolio, photo book, poetry book, baby book, etc. The idea is to give any user who is interested in creating ANY type of publication, an instant tool to publish their own book. The service is free, and the cost only comes when you've decided to print out your book.

The process is pain-free. First, you download their program called "BookSmart" (both PC and Mac). Then you are ready to go. Templates are well-organized, though selections may be limited at this point of time. Blurb will store your files for you, until they are ready to be published. Their prices are competitive, and not overwhelmingly expensive.

Another cool feature is "Selling Your Book." Yes, you can sell your book through Blurb. Whatever profits you make are all yours to keep. I am not sure about that process yet, since I have yet to finish creating my trial book.

Overall, Blurb has managed to bring me back to their site, and become their member. There may be similar kind of places offering the same service already, but this is my first encounter of a company providing such service. Needless to say, I have not used all the features available, and the software "BookSmart" is still a Beta version. So, if you decide to give it a try, be ready for things that can still go wrong during your publishing process. However, it is free of charge at this point, and there is still a lot of possibilities for them to grow into.

Oh, I've got so interested in their product that I've forgot to send them my resume!
